What if I told you that the next time your stove catches on fire, or your candle catches the corner of your room up into flames, you could throw your vase of flowers at it and the fire would extinguish immediately?
Advancements in technology have allowed South Koreans to do just that. Over 10,000 residential fires break out in South Korea each year, and even with a requirement to keep a fire extinguisher in their home, only 42% of households have complied. The average homeowner keeps their extinguisher in non-accessible areas of their home, and often do not know how to use them which creates a larger panic when a fire breaks out.
So how is this country trying to fix the problem? Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has invented anti-fire flower vases known as Firevase which doubles as a throwable fire extinguisher! The potassium carbonate in the vase puts out the fire by suppressing oxygen. It’s always in reach and easy to use, you just pick it up and throw it. Plus, it’s made with safe materials like non-irritating liquids and a rigid PVC bottle. So far, over 100,000 residents have received the Firevase to use in the event of a fire. Is this innovation something that could change the outcome of safety in these homes? Or is this a useless invention that won’t catch on? Only time will tell.
